OCEANSIDE — The city is considering extending its alcohol ban, now limited to nine parks, to all municipal parks.
Councilman Jack Feller, whose recommendation to study the possibility was approved Wednesday by a 3-2 City Council vote, said “children deserve to have alcohol-free parks in the city of Oceanside.”
But Mayor Jim Wood, a former police officer, opposed it because he recalled the Police Department had some objections, although he wasn’t sure what they were.
Councilwoman Esther Sanchez said there’s no reason to ban alcohol unless residents of a neighborhood request it.
“I’m sure if it was a problem, we’d hear,” she said.
Alcohol already is banned at Joe Balderrama, Buccaneer, Buddy Todd, Cesar Chavez, John Landes, Libby Lake, Rotary, Tyson and Fireside parks. The city has 29 parks.
Alcohol is also not allowed on city beaches and at the harbor.
