Drunken driving arrests across California for the first two- thirds of the holiday weekend remained virtually constant compared with last year, while in San Diego they were down by five.
Between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday, California Highway Patrol officers arrested 1,449 people statewide for driving under the influence, down by a single digit from last year’s 1,450. During that time, there were 23 fatalities, compared to 20 for the same period last year.
In San Diego County, CHP officers arrested 130 people for DUI compared with 135 last year, the agency reported. There was one fatality.
To try to stem drunken driving, Escondido police put a checkpoint at 700 W. Grand Ave. from 6:30 p.m. Friday to 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Police arrested three drivers for DUI.
They also made arrests for auto theft, outstanding DUI warrants, and being under the influence of drugs and possessing drug paraphernalia. Escondido police impounded 63 vehicles because drivers were arrested, lacked a license or had their driving privilege suspended. More than 2,600 cars entered the checkpoint.
