Jan-Jul 2006 vs. 2007 PB Crime Statistics Analysis
September 23, 2007 No CommentsFederal Index Crimes are tracked by the FBI and include certain major crimes including murder, rape, armed robbery, aggravated assault, burglaries, theft by type, size and vehicle theft.
A report by the San Diego Police to a news organization (link) in 2004 revealed that only 8% of all 911 calls end up being reported Federal Index Crimes. This should be noted because when Federal Index Crime numbers go up or down that doesn’t necessarily mean that ‘crime’ is up or down. That is, alcohol-related crimes, noise complaints etc. – all the crimes that account for the other 92% of 911 calls – are not being reflected in the Federal Index Crimes reports.
I did an analysis from January to July of 2007 vs. the same period the last year and found that the following crime categories are up in the Pacific Beach neighborhood:
Armed Robbery – up 40% (9 vs. 15 this year to date)
Aggravated Assault – up 18% (89 vs. 108 this year to date)
Residential Burglary – up 15% (126 vs. 148 this year to date)
Rapes have been down markedly (20% for January-July) as last year there were 6 reported rapes in July alone while this year there were none. There were still 10 reported rapes this year which is completely unacceptable. I was told that only 1 in 200 rape victims report the crime so, if this is indeed accurate, could this reflect 2,000 rapes in PB alone. I was also told by a respected San Diego Police officer that the majority of these rapes originate from our business district.
