Crime Watch: Man breaking up fight stabs Marine

What began as a friendly drunken tussle ended with a Marine being stabbed early yesterday, San Diego police said.

The incident began about 2 a.m. when two Marines who had been drinking at a bar began to “play” fight at Cass Street and Grand Avenue in Pacific Beach because one was trying to stop the other from driving home drunk, police said.

A passer-by saw the fight and, in an attempt to break it up, stabbed one of the Marines in the chest and arm. A third Marine who was getting into a taxi nearby saw the melee and came to help.

All three Marines then got into the cab and went to Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, realizing that one of them had been stabbed only when they reached the base gate, Officer Brad Ruff said.

The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

The assailant was described as a white male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with dirty blond hair. He was wearing a black shirt and jeans. –K.D. & S.S.
