2009 San Diego Holiday DUI’s Skyrocket
January 2, 2010 No CommentsThree people were killed over the holiday period in San Diego, including a 21 year-old pregnant woman, Elaina Luquis-Ortiz by the suspected drunk driver Joseph Venegas, 40, of San Diego. Mrs. Luquis-Ortiz’s husband had only just returned from deployment in Iraq.
Steven Luke of NBCSanDiego.com reports: “A huge spike in the number of drunk driving arrests during the holidays shows that despite public awareness campaigns, the message isn’t sinking in.”
“Between December 18 and December 31 – area police, CHP and sheriff deputies arrested 798 people suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. That’s nearly double the number from the same period in 2008.“
