Wall Street Journal – Front Page: Floatopia
July 23, 2010 No CommentsTomorrow Pacific Beach will make the Wall Street Journal - discussing the unintended consequences of people exploiting a new law (beach alcohol ban) with a loophole where bathers are able to drink off-shore.
The reporter Conor Dougherty spent weeks doing interviews over the phone with residents and city officials and visited San Diego to see first hand what the conditions were like – even getting out there on the rafts to experience being a Floatopier.
My big concern now is: will the new ‘loophole’ of allowing people to drink in light (kayaks) mean that dozens of them will start appearing on Mission Bay – now potentially mixing drunk kayakers with power boaters? Sadly, it might take a major accident or drowning to snap some sense into people.
See videos of Floatopia here and here.
On the good news front San Diego is experiencing record numbers of beach goers the second year after the beach alcohol ban has been in place – just as predicted.
