Arizonans ignore boycott, flock to beach

Immigration boycotts and counter boycotts didn’t seem to keep beachgoers from Arizona away from the San Diego shore over the Memorial Day weekend.

Pacific Beach was packed on Monday, despite an organized campaign on the website azfightsback(dot)com to get Arizona residents to stay out of San Diego.

“Whoever wants to go San Diego or go to Arizona, by all means, they are both great places,” said visitor Kalie Zuanich.

The San Diego City Council passed a resolution last month condemning Arizona’s controversial crackdown on illegal residents, Senate Bill 1070. In retaliation, some Arizona residents changed their holiday weekend plans, canceling trips to San Diego.

However, for many Arizona families, hitting the beach in San Diego is the traditional way to kick off the summer, and they were not willing to change that to make a political statement.

“I don’t think you should stop living your life and what you want to do because of what is going on in the world,” said visitor Korina Makey.

Many Arizonans said it was too costly to change their plans on short notice after the boycott was called. Others said they just don’t think the boycott gets to the root of the issue.

“I don’t think a boycott is necessary, but there is a plan unfolding, and we do our best to handle it as it comes,” said visitor Kevin Offill.

Many Arizona residents said as the weather gets warmer, they plan to return to San Diego to beat the heat.
