Fight At Bar West Sends Man To Hospital (Football Star Allegedly Involved)

A man in his 20s was hospitalized following a fist fight in a Pacific Beach parking lot early Monday that may have involved San Diego Chargers wide receiver Legedu Naanee, police said.

The fight at Cass and Hornblend streets was reported around 2:15 a.m., according to San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros.

When police arrived at the scene, they found 21-year-old Amir Khan unconscious on the street. Khan was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla where doctors induced him into a coma because of severe head injuries. Investigators also said Khan suffered facial injuries that include a broken nose.

Witnesses said three black males, possibly including Naanee, were seen running from the scene, Delimitros said, adding that only one was believed to be involved in the actual fight.

On Monday afternoon, the Chargers, on behalf of Naanee, released the following statement: “I was not involved in nor did I witness a fight or altercation of any kind Sunday night. Period.”

“I don’t know how my name came up in it, but I was there. I didn’t see the fight,” Naanee told 10News on Monday after practice. “I don’t like it at all… for the main fact that I didn’t do it. And then too, that it was kinda put out there without me even being able to say whether I was there.”

Naanee was seen practicing Monday, although he has been out several weeks with an injured hamstring.

In an e-mail to 10News, a man who said he is Khan’s brother said: “He will probably get away with it because he is a San Diego Charger. This is an unreal experience I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. He is in critical condition. I just want everyone to know the animal this guy and his friends are.”

During the regular Monday press conference, Coach Norv Turner remained tight-lipped about the incident. “I’ve heard about it, probably like you have,” Turner said.

“I have no information and as soon as we have information about it, we’ll have a comment.”

“We all know how important it is to stay out of trouble and do the right thing, so it would be unfortunate whatever does come out, if it’s if it is indeed something major, but hopefully everything will be alright,” said quarterback Philip Rivers.

Naanee said other Chargers players were at Bar West that night, but did not say who. Police would only say they are investigating the incident.

As of Monday night, investigators said they hadn’t talked to Naanee yet but are scheduled to meet with him on Tuesday. Officers also said six witnesses each gave contradicting information about the fight.

In November 2009, former Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie was accused of assaulting another man with a bottle at Bar West. However, no charges were filed in that incident.
