Bike Police Catch 3 Armed Robbers in PB

Trio arrested in violent San Diego robberies

SAN DIEGO — Three people suspected in a series of violent street robberies in Hillcrest, University Heights and Pacific Beach since Sept. 21 were arrested early Friday, San Diego police said.

Investigators believe the trio — a 38-year-old woman, her 22-year-old boyfriend and her 23-year-old nephew — was involved in as many as eight incidents in which thieves robbed or tried to rob pedestrians at knifepoint, police Lt. Andra Brown said.

Two of the attacks were reported Thursday night.

The first was in Hillcrest on Robinson Avenue near Eighth Avenue about 11:10 p.m., Brown said.

The victim told authorities he was walking over the state Route 163 bridge when two men came up from behind him and grabbed his shirt. They demanded his wallet and threatened to stab him, Brown said.

The man yelled for help and fought with the assailants who pushed him into the path of an oncoming car and ran away, Brown said. The man was not injured and none of his property was taken.

About 10 minutes later on Tyler Avenue near Maryland Street in University Heights, another man was grabbed from behind.

One attacker held a knife to his throat while the other rifled through his pockets. The pair took the man’s cellphone and ran off. The victim suffered a cut to his neck, Brown said.

About 12:30 a.m. Friday, officers spotted a white Toyota near Dawes and Missouri streets in Pacific Beach that was reported to have been used in at least three similar robberies there.

As the officers approached the car, they saw two men walking toward it and one of them dropped a knife, Brown said. Officers arrested the pair as well as a woman sitting in the driver’s seat of the car, she said.

The three matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects who left in a car being driven by a woman, Brown said.

Detectives searched the Spring Valley home where all three live and found items that appear to have come from multiple thefts.

They are sorting through the evidence to try to match it with several cases — three reported in Pacific Beach between Sept. 21 and Oct. 4 and five that occurred in Hillcrest and University Heights between Sept. 21 and Thursday night.

Police are withholding the names of those arrested due to the continuing investigation, Brown said.
