(DUI) Driver Crashes Into Fire Hydrant, Parked Car In PB (at 11am)
November 12, 2011 No CommentsA suspected drunken driver was taken into custody Friday after crashing into a fire hydrant and a parked car in Pacific Beach.
The incident happened at the corner of Grand Avenue and Noyes Street shortly after 11 a.m. Witnesses said a car jumped a curb, struck a fire hydrant and smashed into a parked car. The broken hydrant caused a geyser which shot nearly 50 feet into the air.
Rick Hyde, who owns the parked car, told 10News he and his daughter were getting ready to leave their apartment when he heard a loud noise outside of their home. When he looked out, he saw water shooting dozens of feet into the air.
“It sounded like a train wreck,” said Hyde. “My daughter and I were getting ready to leave and we heard a big bang … A minute or two earlier than that, then we would have been right in the middle of it.”
Passerby John Antonacci told 10News, “We heard a sudden noise and then I turned around and I see a reverse Niagara Falls, so it was pretty crazy.”
Police said the unidentified woman behind the wheel of the vehicle that caused the mess was in her early 20s, and she was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
When firefighters finally stopped the water, the crowd of onlookers burst into applause, and the car’s passenger was able to get out of the car — drenched, but in good condition.
