about
Our Mission
The mission of this website, PBspirits.com, is to create a positive communication vehicle for residents and businesses, as well as local and state government officials, to focus on alcohol-related issues in our community of Pacific Beach, CA.
Pacific Beach – A Community We Love
Articles and issues displayed on this site are a representative sample of the types of alcohol-related crime and safety issues happening in our beach community. Yes, these same issues happen in every city around the world. However, we believe there are unique factors in play in Pacific Beach, including a significant over-concentration of licenses, and are working to address them generally and specifically.
There are also many, many positive stories written about on Pacific Beach for good reason. PB is a fantastic, vibrant community of a diverse group of young and old, home-owners, renters, guests from San Diego and tourists from around the world. Our intent in providing these stories are to point out significant alcohol-related issues that need attention as they affect not only how people perceive our community but, more importantly, people’s quality of life.
Our Purpose
We hope to include many observations about alcohol-related issues in Pacific Beach, CA and look forward to continuing the dialog so that we can develop solutions on a community-wide basis. We cannot rely solely on state or local enforcement, hard as they try, as both are woefully under-resourced. We also cannot solely rely on industry self-enforcement simply because the monetary incentive to skirt the law is extremely significant. By one estimate, the Pacific Beach alcohol machine generates, even without alcohol on our beaches, over $25 million in sales each year.
What’s needed is a concerted effort by all the stakeholders – especially the community – to determine the future of their neighborhoods. A business district should serve their community, not ignore their needs – which is the perception of many of our residents and businesses have.
In Memory Of
This website was created to honor the memory of the many people who have been killed or injured by drunks, especially drunk drivers, who were drinking in Pacific Beach the day of their crime. Enough is enough. As a community we can not sit by and watch another victim be seriously injured or killed without the complete belief that we tried everything in our power to mitigate the myriad of alcohol-related issues our community faces.
